Morpeth Sourdough is situated in historic Morpeth, a steamship port established in 1821, on the Hunter River. Our site comprises the historic bakehouse, shop and residence once the home and workplace of the Arnotts in the 1860s. This c.1851 bakehouse is a rare authentic industrial building, containing possibly the oldest original Scotch Oven existing in Australia. Morpeth village, now classified by the National Trust, is rich in colonial buildings and architecture and is a tourist destination with heritage experience.

Our family company, Morpeth Sourdough, has its heritage with the Hunter Valley and the beginnings of Arnott's Biscuits. Stephen Arnott, the baker, is the grandson of Geoffrey Arnott (Chairman of Arnott's prior to takeover) and the ggg grandson of William Arnott, the founder of Arnott's Biscuits, who established bakeries in West Maitland during the 1850's and with his brother here at 148 Swan Street Morpeth in 1862. The Arnott family is back in baking and will make certain we remain a wholly-owned Australian company. Our family's policy is quality guaranteed and we aim to continue this tradition.

Morpeth Sourdough is traditional, authentic sourdough bread using the same recipe and techniques used by our forefathers in colonial times. The bread is made using only flour, purified water and sea salt, no baker's yeast or additives are used and every loaf is hand made.

This authentic method of producing sourdough, relies on the lactobacilli and wild yeast, as the only means of making the dough rise. Our sourdough, which is real sourdough, therefore has no preservatives, raising agents, emulsifiers, stabilisers, extenders, bulking agents, baker's yeast or sourdough flavourings.

We have a full range of our sourdough, freshly baked along with a comprehensive range of locally produced and house-made condiments. Come and enjoy some sourdough; taste the quality and authenticity of real sourdough bread!

Arnott’s Bakehouse Restaurant
Come and enjoy lunch or dinner with us at Arnott’s Bakehouse Restaurant, you’ll love the heritage experience!

Set in the historic village of Morpeth, Hunter Valley, this newly established restaurant has opened its doors on the upper level of the heritage listed 1850's building that remains the flagship of Morpeth Sourdough. The same building that was used as a bakery in the 1860's by the owner Stephen Arnott's great, great, great grandfather, William Arnott, the founder of Arnott's Biscuits. This building is the last remaining historic commercial site used by William Arnott in the Hunter Valley, prior to the establishment of Arnott’s Biscuits in Newcastle.

Overlooking the Hunter River, the old residence is warm and intimate, with a small cocktail lounge and two dining rooms, combining a Victorian ambience with a clean modern elegance. The spacious, covered verandah set high above the village main street adds another 30 places alfresco, the perfect view for leisurely dining. A truly unique experience of history you will want to remember and come back to. If you just wish to stop in for a drink you can sample a local Semillon (for which the Hunter is famous for) or have a classic cocktail… a Martini or Champagne cocktail, made the old fashioned way.

Chef Jose Miguel, having come from some of the finest Michelin Star restaurants in Europe and a Two- hatted restaurant in Sydney, draws inspiration from the Mediterranean with his stylish country cuisine. His entire menu is unpretentious and proudly made by himself and his apprentice chef, right down to the champagne vinaigrette. Jose loves desserts and makes certain you finish the evening with something spectacularly delicious and of course, crafted by him. Join us for lunch or dinner; you’ll be pleased you did.
